Backup or Portable Generator: Which One Is Right for You?

There are two main types of generators to know: standby generators and portable generators. Most homeowners seeking whole-home protection choose a standby unit, but portable generators can be the right fit depending on your budget and needs. We install and service both, and our technicians are Honeywell and Generac certified, so you’re getting equipment and installation from a team that knows these systems inside and out.

Here’s how the two compare:

  • Portable Generators: Portable generators cost less upfront than standby units. Connected to your home’s circuit-breaker panel through a transfer switch, a modern portable unit can cover many essential circuits. They also include built-in outlets for extension cords if no transfer switch is installed, and they double as power sources for camping or job sites. The main trade-off is convenience: portable generators don’t start automatically. During an outage, you’ll need to bring the unit outside and connect it manually. They run on gasoline, produce more noise than standby units, and carry a carbon monoxide risk if not positioned correctly outdoors and away from the home.
  • Backup (Standby) Generators: Standby generators are permanently installed outside and wired directly to the electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch. When utility power fails, the transfer switch detects the outage and can bring the generator online within seconds, with no action required from you. Modern standby units run on natural gas or propane, operate quietly, and can support a home through extended outages lasting days. Because they’re hard-wired outdoors, there’s no carbon monoxide risk from improper setup. The trade-off is cost: standby generators represent a larger upfront investment, but they deliver a high level of reliability and convenience that portable units can’t match.

What Generator Installation in Monmouth County Includes

We carry generator equipment from Honeywell and Generac, two established names in residential backup power. Before any work begins, we assess your home’s electrical load to determine the right generator size. That load calculation accounts for your HVAC system, sump pump, refrigeration, and any other circuits you want covered during an outage. From there, we provide a free quote and manage the installation from permitting through final testing.

Standby generator installations in New Jersey require both electrical and gas permits from your local municipality. Permitting timelines vary by town across Monmouth County, and we handle that process so you don’t have to. Every installation includes a complete automatic transfer switch setup and on-site testing before we consider the job finished. Our technicians arrive in fully stocked service vehicles so the work moves efficiently from day one.

Schedule your generator installation today, and you’ll get:
