3 Tips to Better Maintain Your Heater and Save Money

Prep your heater for winter and keep it around for longer by following our three expert tips!

Schedule Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance is typically a simple matter of bi-annual tune-ups for your HVAC system. During a tune-up, your technician gets to look at your system and check over to make sure everything is running as it should. Annual maintenance is as important to your heating and cooling system as it is to change the oil in your car. Maintenance should be scheduled early in the spring and autumn to best prepare your home for the changing seasons.

Change the Air Filters

Changing your air filter is the biggest (and easiest) way to have a positive impact on your heating system. Indoor air collects dust, dirt, pet dander, insect parts, and all other kinds of debris and particulates that can harm your indoor air quality. Your air filter catches these particles to prevent them from circulating through the air. However, after a while, the filter will get blocked up and can start to cause problems for your heater.

Follow manufacturer instructions for how often you should change your air filter — typically once every 30 to 90 days — to keep your air clean and pure!

Practice Efficient Heating Habits

If you have a programmable thermostat, make sure to change the settings for the new season! The Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to around 10 degrees warmer than the outside air. However, that’s not the best rule of thumb for especially chilly nights, so setting your thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit at night will keep you comfortable and your system in good shape.

If you plan to go out of town for the holidays, make sure to leave your heating system on! Adjust the thermostat no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent the plumbing from freezing while you’re away.
